One of my favorite ice cream flavors has always been Turkey Hill’s Honey Granola Ice Cream. I haven’t been able to find it now for years. Well summer is upon us and that just screams ice cream to me so let’s just make our own!
If I could still get Honey Granola Ice Cream I never would have even tried to make it myself!
I’m so glad I can no longer find this flavor because I feel like a whole new world has opened up for me. The frozen treat game and I am ready to play.
There has been a lot of hype on social media about the Ninja CREAMI recently. I’m seeing a lot of ice cream flavors and recipes being thrown around. Since I don’t own an ice cream maker I considered the investment. While doing my research I started to realize this is an actual investment. They are around $200 and another appliance to store for one and they make one pint at a time for another. You freeze solid whatever concoction you are turning in to ice cream first and then the Creami churns it until it’s creamy like ice cream.
I could totally see the writing on the wall with this appliance. After a brief honeymoon period of constant use it will totally end up in the back of some cabinet with all of the other time saving applicances I had to have to make my life easier.
Then I stumbled on a no churn, no cook homemade ice cream technique. This is clearly just too good to be true. Um…no it’s not. It’s totally true… and good… and I’ll be experimenting with this all summer long for sure.
Did you know you can make ice cream without an ice cream maker?
You truly can get an ice cream maker anywhere. They are not all $200 but they do all have to be stored and require maintenance whether during the process or after with the clean up. However, I did NOT know that they are not necessarily required to make ice cream. I am telling you it is so easy to make homemade ice cream without one. The recipe in this post is so forgiving, requires minimal ingredients and you can totally take it and make it your own. Add your own twists, flavors or mixins. Now that we both know we can do this without a special appliance the world is now our frozen delight as they say. Actually….no one says that. I totally made it up but it doesn’t make it any less true.
Let’s set out on this homemade ice cream making journey together shall we? Here we go…..
Step by Step
Make this Ice Cream your own…
The ways you can change this recipe are endless. It all starts with your base. This recipe calls for a vanilla base. You can add diced fruit, jams, candy, nuts, crushed cookies, cereal, caramel, salty snacks, left over cake, anything you like.
If you want a chocolate base just add 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder and any mixins you like with chocolate. Think about the endless flavor combinations. Try to recreate your favorite flavor. You will be surprised just how easy it will be.
Let me know what flavor combinations you come up with!
Honey Granola Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste (or extract)
- pinch of salt
- 2 cups cold heavy cream (NOT heavy whipping cream)
- Any honey flavored granola (or flavor you like – I used Salted Maple Pecan which also happened to be GLUTEN FREE)
- Honey to taste
Directions
- Make your vanilla base by combining sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and a pinch of salt in a bowl and set aside.
- With a hand mixer or a stand mixer, whip two cups of cold heavy cream until stiff peaks appear.
- Fold one cup of whipped cream into your vanilla base (this is called “lightening your base”)
- Then gently fold your base into the rest of your whipped cream.
- Pour half of your ice cream into a freezer friendly container.
- Generously top with your granola and honey. No real measurements here, just cover the top generously as you like.
- Pour the other half of ice cream on top and swirl with a knife so the mixins incorporate.
- Lay wax paper directily on top of ice cream to prevent ice crystals from developing.
- Cover tightly with a lid or foil and freeze for at least 6 hours.
- Scoop and enjoy!
